The UN Global Compact is a non-binding pact that encourages companies around the world to adopt sustainable and socially responsible policies. The UN Global Compact is based on ten principles that cover human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption. In Italy, only 200 organizations and companies lend their support for the Global Compact. Again in 2020 Eurotech submitted its written commitment, documenting the company’s global efforts towards corporate sustainability, for the GC: ‘2020 marks 20 years of the Global Compact and we look to the future, despite everything, with optimism – said Roberto Siagri, Eurotech’s CEO – . I also believe that now, more than ever before, what is needed is not an improvement or a slight change in strategy, but, rather, to drive a disruptive and evolutionary path of change towards greater social equality and environmental protection. This is possible thanks to the advances in digital technologies which are proven to be more democratizing and demonetizing; with their innovative application they will be instrumental not only to achieve sustainability but also to overcome new, unpredictable challenges that will arise, such as the management of Covid-19. The challenges posed by the pandemic include a future that risks encountering new viruses and an inability to address them: there is no health where there is no wealth. Developed nations with the resources to invest in health systems are better able to cope with emergencies and we must help strengthen those nations that lack the resources to protect and care for their citizens. That is why we must focus on the post-Covid-19 period and our devastated economies. We must recognize that the effects of the virus on the world’s economies have the potential to cause more damage than the virus itself. More than ever, we must put aside our selfishness and act responsibly and our compassion must not extend resolutely to the elderly but especially to the young. They face the greatest challenge, growing up while navigating a repressed economy and seeking a new normality that will include social distance, separation and limits imposed across almost every segment of society. As we give shelter to our elders, we must allow our young people to return to life and pursue their future. In particular, and above all, their right to work creatively and contribute to the economic activity we desperately need, not only to rebuild post Covid-19, but above all to pursue sustainable, global development. Once again, this year we renew our support for the Global Compact. We are proud supporters of its ten principles and have accepted Antonio Guterres’ appeal: we will act. In addition, I invite the leaders of other technology companies to join us in drafting a Manifesto on technology, thus taking steps to address the urgent issues facing our planet. We have reached a crucial moment in human history and we must formally commit ourselves, putting our intentions on paper.
